Even if the following topics are not that interesting, they are very important. Since we are traveling around the world as a diving instructor from January 2022, we had to inform ourselves extensively about various insurances and take care of them. We personally would have been definitely happy during our planning if we had found good information from others about this. Therefore, we now provide our experiences and monthly costs in a blog post for you.
Furthermore we need to mention that we’re from Germany and we may have some insurances that some of you don’t even know or you need others as we do, but still it may help you.

Short Summary of our Situation
We both swapped our office job in Germany for a life as diving instructors. For the first five months we will be in the Maldives, doing our instructor training course (ITC) and gaining experience afterwards. After that we will be working in Malta for the summer season!
If you want to know more, feel free to read the blogpost "From office job to dive instructor in paradise - We're off then!".
But now we start here with the most important insurances for us.
Diving Accident Insurance
We have taken out our diving accident insurance with aqua med. There we were already insured as vacation divers in the Dive Card Basic tariff and therefore it was obvious for us to simply upgrade this already existing contract. We have now chosen the Dive Card Professional. In this contract is also a diving instructor liability insurance up to 5 million € integrated and also the diving accident protection for the own students.
The diving accident insurance costs us 149€ per year per person.
Health Insurance Abroad
In Germany, we were both insured through a statutory health insurance. Of course, this does not apply to foreign countries. The usual travel health insurances do not apply here either, because the stay is longer than 56 days. So we could have insured the trip per se with start and end dates, but then we would have been faced with a different problem. It was very important to us that we are not only insured during the trip, but also in Germany during our visits home.
In the end, we decided on an insurance policy from Tauch.Versicherung. Here we have the full health protection abroad and can make our precaution examinations or if necessary also operations in Germany. We have chosen the premium tariff with 1000€ deductible and pay in our age group without pre-existing conditions about 110€ per month. The price is strongly dependent on age, country zone, pre-existing conditions, etc. In a short consultation you can get advice and information about everything.
The topic of liability insurance was fortunately the easiest for us. We already had a liability insurance in Germany, and after a short inquiry we found out that it also covers us for up to three years abroad. So we did not have to worry about this.
Our liability insurance costs us 55€ per year per person.
We didn't have an accident insurance yet, so we informed ourselves about different ones. We have chosen VHV because of the price-performance ratio. This one was easy to conclude online but unfortunately after two weeks we received a message that they don't insure dive instructors.
So far we haven't found one that covers dive instructors.
Also the pension insurance was regulated so far over our employer. For the future, however, we do not want to do without our pension insurance and therefore pay ourselves and voluntarily into the pension fund the minimum contribution of currently 83.70 € (as of Dec. 2021 in Germany) per month. But this is only for the first five months, because after that we are registered again in Malta (within the EU) through the employer.
It should be emphasized here, however, that this amount increases our later pension almost not at all. We only pay this in so that our time in the Maldives is counted towards our pension years.
Summary of the Amounts of the Insurances
If we add up all the insurances and fix costs we’re paying the following amounts per person:
So in total that’s around 210€ per month per person, which sounds not that much maybe for some of you, but you definitely need to consider the costs when you’re planning something like this. Especially considering the lower salary as a dive instructor or maybe none at all in the beginning.
