From Office Job to Diving Instructor in Paradise – We’re off then!
New Beginning as a Dive Instructor
[reading time: approx. 6 minutes]
Yes, you have read correctly. This blog post is about why and how we swapped our office jobs in Germany for a diving instructor training in the Maldives and what's next for us in the future. We're definitely looking forward to it and will be sharing photos and videos with you regularly on Instagram at @divingthisworld.
The Idea for the Job in the Diving Industry
First of all, a few quick points about our previous lives. We both had quite good office jobs in well-known companies, a nice apartment, a regular salary and thus security. But we were not really happy. We lived on our own and every day was like the other. We always looked forward to our diving vacations the most during the year!
On a vacation to Malta in 2018, we made our Open Water Diver certificate and learned to love diving! On that same vacation, the idea that we might like life as a dive instructor first arose in us. The local instructors seemed so happy, so carefree, able to see so much of the world and experience something new every day.
Smile after the Dive
The idea grew with every diving vacation and in 2021 we took a six-week sabbatical and took our first step into the professional track on Malta: we completed our dive guide training there. The time there was also a kind of trial run for us to find out if we still enjoy it when it goes beyond vacation.
In short: When the day came that we were back in Germany and sat in front of our screens in the office, the decision was already made internally. We can't let our lives pass us by at a young age without doing what we really enjoy. We want to be free, to experience something, to enjoy every day, to discover the underwater world, to bring joy to other people. That's what we want to do right now! And not to be in the office all day and not to see anything of the real world.
Of course, the whole process took a few more weeks until we finally did it, quit our jobs and told our friends and families. But it was clear: From January 2022 it starts!
Job as a Dive Guide or Training as a Dive Instructor?
Is Covid pulling a fast one on us?
Actually, we wanted to look for a job as a dive guide starting in January. We applied at many dive centers in Egypt, Mexico, Thailand, Mauritius and Honduras. But unfortunately we noticed quite fast the effects of the Corona Pandemic. No dive center wanted to hire dive guides, only instructors were wanted. The number of employees was reduced everywhere and if someone was hired, then understandably only someone who can do everything and is also allowed to train.
Not with us - the ITC
Our only way out, in order to be nevertheless already active starting from January in the dipping industry, was thus the ITC (Instructor Training Course) - the course to the dipping instructor. For this we received quite fast feedback on our applications. The final choices were Mexico, Roatàn and the Maldives. Due to recommendations from friends and the current situation we decided for the Maldives for Dive Point Maldives!
From the end of May / beginning of June we will go back to Europe and work the summer season on Malta as fully trained instructors at Dive Vision Malta.

The Start into a New Phase of Life
We actually decided to quit our jobs completely and not just take a sabbatical or unpaid time off. By doing this, we just wanted to leave ourselves open to how long we will be on the road and not already have a fixed end date from the beginning. Maybe it's a year, maybe it's two years or longer, we'll see.
So we quit our jobs and moved out of our apartment as well. We moved our permanent residence back to our parents' home, where we also placed our important personal belongings. Material items like furniture, car, etc. were all sold.
So off we really go! To the Maldives! We can hardly believe it!! At the beginning we will work as Dive Master, then we will do our ITC (Instructor Course) at the end of January on the local island Guraidhoo and after that we will work as certified dive instructors again on the You & Me island in paradise!

Another point that you must not forget on such an adventure is, of course, to make sure you are well insured. We have taken care of topics such as health insurance, diving accident insurance, liability insurance, accident insurance and pension insurance. There will also be a separate blog post for all those who are planning something similar and want to know more about it.
Stay tuned for new, paradisiacal above- as well as underwater content!
